What Is Light Gauge Metal Framing?

Light gauge metal framing is a type of construction that uses light-gauge steel to support battens on which plywood or other wallboards are nailed. Thin sheets of galvanized material cover the edges, corners, and tops of studs. Light metal framing is used primarily in residential construction. Typically, the walls are sheathed on both sides with 7/32- or 1/4-inch sheets of Type C-B plywood or OSB board, and the ceiling and roof are sheathed with similar material. Pressure-treated lumber can also be used for all sheathing. In addition, interior walls may be covered with gypsum board and sheetrock or another wallboard (wood-fiber panels are also used).
